The perfect I Think You Should Leave Sketch has a clearly identifiable arc: starts out weird from the jump, inexplicably escalates into ever-higher levels of insanity, and uses Tim Robinson’s distinct brand of oddball weirdness to full effect. These sketches are the best the crème de la crème, the jokes that are so absurdly delivered by characters so memorable with personalities so utterly batshit that they’ve lodged themselves in the minds of everyone who has watched them. Well, shit, dude, just write your own! The list here is more interested in the deeper question of what makes an I Think You Should Leave sketch great or truly transcendent. Robinson’s comedic stylings are always sharp, and his distinct energy that can completely explode or be fully contained in a single instant guides the show well enough that every sketch, zany or mundane, gets laughs. We picked tiers for a specific reason: The truth is, there’s no such thing as a bad time with ITYSL. To answer, we’ve put on our thinking caps, crunched the numbers, plotted out a complicated and scientifically definitive ranking of each sketch from the series, and organized them into tiers. “But Toussaint, Zosha, and co.,” you rhetorically ask, “what are the best sketches from I Think You Should Leave that I should watch first?” Good question, hypothetical Polygon reader. If you’re new to the show and want to burn through the show’s three seasons, you’re in luck: Every episode clocks in just shy of 20 minutes and can be leisurely dusted off in a weekend. Writer-comedian Tim Robinson’s situational sketch comedy series has firmly established itself as one of the best series on television for its idiosyncratic characters, deadpan weirdness, and easily quotable jokes and catchphrases that have lodged themselves in the zeitgeist of the internet through countless gifs, memes, and remixes. Dewey (1910/2003) defines reflection as a meaning-making process of experiences related to other experiences, transformed into knowledge that can be practiced. The concept reflection is described by several authors in ways appropriate for this study. Hattie and Timperley propose that feedback questions regarding goals, progress and feed forward activities have to work together to be reflected and answered, unless they can inhibit the effect of feedback on learning. Feedback is also understood as a strategy to move learners forward ( Black and Wiliam, 2009) and as an information provided by a teacher or a peer, regarding aspects of the learners understanding or performance ( Hattie and Timperley, 2007). In such decision-makings, the agents, including both teachers and learners and their peers, and the possibility to create discussions are considered important. In the literature, feedback is described as one type of activity in the domain of formative assessment practice, defined by Black and Wiliam (2009) as an activity to elicit, interpret and use evidence of student achievement in order to make decisions about the next instructional step. With this learning outcome implemented in music teacher education programs, students’ reflections can be expected to be used in individual instrumental/vocal teaching. Also, reflection abilities are expected as a learning outcome in all education systems in Sweden ( Swedish Code of Statutes, 2009) and many other European countries ( Gaunt, 2016). The ability to critically and independently “reflect on own and others’ experiences” ( Swedish Code of Statutes, 2010) is a required learning outcome in all vocational programs in Sweden. This study examines feedback situations in one-to-one instrumental/vocal teaching in Swedish specialist music teacher programs, paying specific attention to how self-reflection and independence are given space in teacher–student interaction. The discussion addresses some didactic issues regarding the findings. The feedback approaches realizing these discourses are described in terms of space for conversation or exploration as well as a call for attention or re-creation, evident in all studied lessons. In contrast, the controlling discourse emphasizes constraints on such opportunities, connected to the hierarchical master–apprentice music tradition. The negotiating discourse emphasizes opportunities for student self-reflections, drawing on current institutional curricula and government requirements regarding reflection abilities. The findings indicate that feedback is constructed through two contrasting discourses, resulting in various ways of realizing feedback related to reflection opportunities. A social semiotic perspective is used to study representations of feedback meaning-making in the interaction between students and teachers as well as the understandings and approaches related to traditions and norms in music education. The data comprise video-recorded one-to-one instrumental/vocal lessons between students and teachers. This article concerns video-recorded feedback activities in one-to-one instrumental/vocal lessons in specialist music teacher education, paying special attention to the space offered for student self-reflection and independence. In higher music education, problems have been reported regarding students’ lack of independence in one-to-one instrumental/vocal lessons, little space for reflection, and education based on a hierarchical master–apprentice tradition, regulating and restricting students’ opportunities to learn and reflect. This is the perfect size to slot into a newsfeed without Facebook clipping or stretching your photo to fit.įacebook stories are the same size as Instagram stories, so you’ll need an image size of 1080 x 1920 with an aspect ratio of 9.16. The pixel dimension for an Instagram story is 1080 x 1920 with an aspect ratio of 9.16.įor a Facebook feed post, you’ll need an image size of 1200 x 630. Alternatively, you could make Instagram story templates. It’s a good idea to take any photographs that are intended for stories in portrait orientation (taller than they are wide). Instagram stories are vertical, so you’ll need to flip your photo to fit. This will be scaled down by Instagram, but using a larger image will give you the best possible image quality. Some platforms won’t let you publish photos unless they are the correct size, so it’s important to get it right.Ī standard Instagram image should be 1080 x 1080. When you’re creating social media assets, there are lots of different sizes to consider depending on what platform you’re using. Discover the main print sizes and what they are appropriate for: There’s nothing worse than printing work and realising the photo has become pixelated or misshapen. When you’re designing for print, it’s important to know what the correct size is for the image you want to use. What are the standard image sizes for print? This is a slightly longer width than a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is the perfect aspect ratio to shoot photos or film in if you’re creating photos that will fill a screen.Ī 16:9 ratio is more common on most computer monitors and modern wide-screen TVs. This is the aspect ratio of original 35 mm film, which is why it’s so commonly used.Ĥ:3 is the aspect ratio that some computer monitors, TVs and digital cameras use. It’s commonly used for things like social media profile photos.Īnother common aspect ratio is 3:2, which is used across much of film and digital photography. Using a 1:1 aspect ratio means you’re shooting a square image, as both sides are the same width and height. A ratio of 3:2 means the width is greater than the height, creating a rectangular image. It essentially tells you what shape the photo is going to be.įor example, an aspect ratio of 1:1 means the width and height are the same, creating a square image. By resizing images so they fit the exact space they are supposed to, you can improve the site’s performance and user experience.Īn aspect ratio refers to the ratio of an image’s width compared to its height. If you have lots of large photos on a website, it can take longer for pages to load, which users might not be patient enough to hang around for. However, your browser will still need to load the larger image. If an original image is larger than the space it fills on a website, it will shrink to fit. When you’re designing for the web, it’s important to think about image sizes as it can affect site speed. This way, you can make sure the aspect ratio you’re using reflects the size of the image and the subject of the photo - so you don’t have to crop out as much from your photo to make it fit. Therefore, it’s worth knowing what size your photo will be before you take it. Using the correct image size can make sure your photos appear in a shape that best fits the subject. To achieve the best results from your photography, size matters. Treatment for compulsive gambling includes inpatient & outpatient programs, residential care, halfway houses, behavior modification, individual and group therapy, and traditional psychoanalysis (Bayer, 2000). Environmental stressors or depression may increase the frequency of gambling (Bayer, 2000). It may be regular or episodic, but it is often chronic (Bayer, 2000). Pathological gambling typically begins in adolescence for boys and later in life for girls (Bayer, 2000). Women who do have this disorder are often hesitant to seek treatment this may be because society tends to view gambling as less acceptable for women than men. This impulse-control disorder is more common among men than women. Compulsive gambling can be confused with bipolar disorder, which sometimes accompanies compulsive gambling (Bayer, 2000). They may also have comorbid mood disorders, substance-related disorders, antisocial behavior, attention-deficit disorder, or hyperactivity (Bayer, 2000). They may even resort to illegal, but typically nonviolent, means of acquiring money to gamble (Bayer, 2000).Ĭompulsive gamblers are more prone to medical conditions that are brought about by stress such as hypertension, peptic ulcers, and migraine headaches (Bayer, 2000). Compulsive gamblers often find themselves lying to their family members and friends to hide the severity of their problem. This disorder can result in a host of occupational, social, and legal problems. After some time, the individual may feel compelled to take higher risks to produce the desired level of excitement. In order to be diagnosed as a pathological gambler, the individuals symptoms must be persistent and recurrent, and the individual must be preoccupied with reliving past gambling experiences or planning future gambling excursions (Bayer, 2000). Some features associated with pathological gamblers include denial, overconfidence, delusions of grandeur, development of superstitions, highly competitive, and overly concerned with approval from others (Bayer, 2000). The transition from recreational gambling to pathological gambling may occur gradually, or it may transition suddenly in response to a stressful event such as job loss (Bayer, 2000). Pathological gambling (PG) involves being unable to resist the impulse to gamble. I didn’t know what she planned on doing with it, but all she wanted was a “nice picture” of me and Stephanie and our Costco package included 50 prints and a digital flash drive. We kept noticing small things we forgot to pack, which reinforced just how out of practice we were with packing for trips like this! Mom had asked for us to bring home one thing - a formal portrait. The evening brought our first formal night, so we got all gussied up for what felt like the first time in forever. We ended up back in the room to relax, wave watch and enjoy the treats we had left in the room. The waves were really starting to pick up, turning the pool into a wave pool and making it hard on all folks to walk anywhere. Steph just wanted rocky road ice cream from the ice cream station. They’d have the most diverse options (and also hand washing stations, by the way!) to use. The Encore has more than 70 nationalities represented in the crew onboard? Or that there are more than 100 different pastries prepared in the galley every day? That the ship carries the equivalent of 169 bathtubs full of alcohol on each voyage? That they do 11,000 lbs of laundry every day? We got to hear from the crew and see what the crew-only areas are like and it was just so interesting!Īfter some post-martini down time in the room, we headed upstairs to Garden Cafe for lunch. We love these behind-the-scenes sessions and learned a ton of fun facts. We browsed the shops and got some fresh air and wave watching time out on The Waterfront.Īfterwards, we settled in the atrium for an espresso martini (…me), a Diet Pepsi for Steph and the How To Run a Floating Hotel Q&A with Cruise Director Silas and the senior hotel staff. We noticed that the buy up on our dining package was actually cheaper than it was in our pre-cruise planner, so we added two additional nights of speciality dining for something like $75/each. Fruit Salad Egg & Avocado Wrap Eggs BenedictĪfter breakfast, we strolled around the ship a bit, starting at the dining reservations desk to sort out Stephanie’s multiple reservations at Cagney’s. It was nice and leisurely and we poured over the activities with our morning coffee, planning out the day ahead. We opted for breakfast at Savor, where service was prompt and there was a menu full of traditional breakfast options. There are a few options for breakfast onboard the Encore: there’s a sit down breakfast service at the Savor dining room, a different menu sit down service at The Local, a full-service buffet at the Garden Cafe, a lighter buffet at the Observation Lounge and if you didn’t want any of those options, there’s room service (and even a full service Starbucks!) for additional fees. Our time in Seattle was so active that a relaxing don’t-do-much-at-all kind of sea day felt like the kind of fun we needed. But the seas started rolling the evening before and never really let up, and as we woke up and started getting ready, the sun would come out, and then it would rain as we sailed into darker clouds. More low-key than we usually go for, but plenty of activities to keep us busy if we wanted to be kept busy. The Freestyle Daily listed a handful of activities - not as many as Carnival (who sets a high bar, in our opinion), but there was plenty to do: fruit carving demos, destination lectures, shopping specials, trivia. We knew that booking an Alaska itinerary meant that our usual sea days wouldn’t be so usual - the temps wouldn’t be prime for pool time, the seas are usually rockier and the weather is more unpredictable. I like those just as much - they’re not much to write about but they’re so relaxing and if nothing has come out of the past two years for me, it’s a deep appreciation for down time. But sometimes, they’re just completely inactive. Or they’re filled with pool time, sunshine and frozen cocktails. Sometimes, they’re super active and we hop from activity to activity. I love the choose-your-own-adventure kind of fun that sea days bring. |
